Welcome to Hodge Ranch Boers. My name is David Hodge and with my wife
Carol, we own 45 acres in Wimberley, Texas. Wimberley is halfway
between Austin and San Antonio. We started raising goats in 1998 in
order to keep an agricultural exemption on our land. We started with
15 goats that were a combination of half boer and half mohair. There
were a few Spanish and Nubian thrown in as well. We also had a
three-quarter boer buck. We had no cross fencing so the goats would
have kids and we would sell the bucks at auction. We lost about half
to predators and the environment each year, but as we both worked full time,
that seemed okay. We had no idea what goats were decent and we never
culled.
Around 2004 I got concerned about inbreeding, since I had the same buck for
five years, and decided to look for another buck. Fortunately, I met
Coni Ross and purchased an average full blood buck and four percentage does.
Through Coni Ross, I started learning about the goat business and decided to
get serious about improving my goats. The goats got better and when I
retired in 2007, I purchased four full blood does and an excellent buck from
Coni Ross. This year with forty kids on the ground, I will be able to
improve the herd dramatically, as well as sell some nice wethers. My
goal is to start showing soon and have some full bloods to sell by next
year. |
